Volleyball Participation Trends
Whether it's the squeak of sneakers on hardwood floors, the feel of sand
between toes, or blades of grass rubbing the soles of feet, volleyball
remains a strong part of the American sports landscape. Despite a 39% drop
since 1990, total volleyball participation seems to have stabilized in 2001,
with over 24 million players hitting the court, sand, and grass over the
past year. This is buoyed even further by the fact that frequent
participation (those playing more than 25+ times per year) is up from 4.5
million in 1999 to over 6 million in 2001.
These facts are available in SGMA International's Superstudy(r) of Sports
Participation - Volleyball 2001 (conducted by American Sports Data, Inc).
Other facts and figures found in this report include:
* Nearly 11 million players (of the 24 million) were under the age of 18 in
2001, placing volleyball sixth in that age category, among 22 selected
youth-oriented activities.
* Court volleyball remains the largest of the three segments, with nearly 13
million players.
* Women comprise over 55% of the total volleyball players and 62% of all
court players.
* More than 45% of volleyball players are between the ages of 12 and 24 and
nearly 40% are female.
