TeamSports MarketAUGUST 01, 2003 -- Internet retailing has proved to be an effective tool in reaching sporting goods retail customers. According to the just-released eMarketer study entitled "North America e-commerce Report," business-to-consumer e-commerce in the U.S. is currently a $70 billion business and is expected to grow to $90 billion by the end of the year. As people become more experienced online, and as online access becomes easier, more and more people are shopping on the Web. Some other interesting statistics from eMarketer: * The average amount spent by U.S. Internet users (14+) in 2003 will be $717. * Fifty-eight percent of Internet users will purchase goods and services online in 2003. * Ten percent of experienced Internet users shopped for sporting goods online in 2002. * Sporting goods purchases online grew at a 19 percent rate between 2001 and 2002. * In 2002, $1.1 billion was spent online for sporting goods. This was estimated to be 2.3 percent of the total sporting goods business that year. (That year, 14 percent of books and 23 percent of computers and software were sold online.) * Nine percent of sporting goods shoppers researched their products online and then bought in physical stores (38 percent of consumer electronics shoppers did the same).
